OBYC History
The Orr's-Bailey Yacht Club evolved from the Orr's and Bailey's Sportsmen's Club, which was organized in October, 1949. The purpose of the Sportsmen's Club was to promote sport fishing in Casco Bay by conducting a season-long derby. Trophies were awarded to the winners of the various contests, and a certificate was given to everyone who wished to carry home evidence of his skill with rod and reel.

During the early years, Orr's and Bailey's Islands Sportsman's Club meetings were held at the Sebasco House at the base of Merritt House Road, and later in a room under Prince's Store, which is next to the Cribstone Bridge.

Miss Prince's Souvenirs Store was a third site where the Orr's and Bailey Island Sportsmen's Club gathered. Meetings were held in the small building on the right, which is at the bottom of Merritt Hill Road.

The present location of the Orr's-Bailey Yacht Club is part of the former Camp Rutledge for boys. The land was purchased in 1954 from Helen Cary, who lived in the house north of the Club. For two years Orr's and Bailey Island Sportsmen's Club rented the dock area in front of the Cary house, until a new wharf was built where it stands today. Total membership at that time was 165.
